Care Bears wrap up season

THE WEST Vancouver Care Bears
— the baseball team of the West
Vancouver Care Centre —- ended
the season recently with a record
of nine wins and five losses.

Made up of care aids, nurses,
housekeepers, managers and sup-
port staff from the West Van-
couver long-term care facility, the
Care Bears brought the centre a
measure of glory with their winn-
ing ways.

“It’s great for morale,’’ said
Care Bears coach and leftfielder
Terry Bourdages, 30. ‘‘There’s a
lot of excitement in it, and it keeps
us in shape.”’

steps on to the scene after an inju-
ry, Lecker assures people that is
only part of what they do. .

“‘We’re really interested in
prevention,’’ she said, ‘“‘We re-
educate people in how to prevent
injuries, how to move in optimal
ways and how to sit (when) driving
to avoid (neck) strain.” .

With a 9-5 win-lose record, the
Care Bears slipped from their
earlier season’s 9-1 record, but
Bourdages said that was a result of
joining an organized league this
year as opposed to just playing
other care facilities. .

“We're going.to be meaner than
ever next year,’’ he predicted.
“‘Last year we had Care Bears
(pictured) on our jerseys, this time
we'll have Kodiak-type bears. But
we'll still keep the name.”’

the South Slope YMCA Mixed
League, the team is now looking to
transfer its efforts to another sport

squad has fostered a junior
counterpart — a T-ball team of the
same name.

The adult Care Bears team —
with players 22 to 50 years old —
has issued a challenge to other
North Shore long-term care facili-
ties to meet them on the field next
season.

“There are about 10 (facilities).
If we all got together we could
form our own league,”’ said Bour-
dages.
