APPROXIMATELY (15000 sparts
fishermen demonstrated at Satur-
day's official opening of the new
$8 million federal Fisheries and
Oceans fish research laboratory.
The demonstrators, many of
whom were from Vancouver
Island, were protesting the reduc-
tion from 20 to eight in the anaual
chinook limit for sport fishermen
in Georgia Strait. Fisheries and
Oceans Minister Tom Siddon, who
spoke at the opening, announced
the new restrictions under a pro-
gram aimed at conserving dwindl-
ing chinoek salmon stocks in
Georgia Strait.

West Vancouver. The $8 million
facility, at 4160 Marine Drive in
West Vancouver, replaces (the
trailers that have served as a labo-
ratory since the late 60s. The West
Vancouver lab is a world teader in
research into stimulating salmon
growth.
