NEARLY EVERYONE loves food, but haw many of us are

into tap-dancing for handouts?

Last Saturday was cold but,
dewn at our condo, it was bright
and sunny. Oldest daughter and
Brian were outside washing their
cars. Soon, they were joined by
curious visiter wha yowled
friendly greeting and took over
supervisory position. ‘Mom, come
have a look at this cat!*’

A black and white beachball on
four skinny legs was delighted to
meet me. His splayed back legs
hinted at advanced age as did a
few missing teeth. Otherwise he
was sleek, bright-cyed and healthy.
And friendly. .

The kitchen door was open. In
he marched and found the
refrigerator with practised case,

_ Then he went into his act. Tap-
dancing.

Most cats will knead their front
paws when they are happy (or
hungry). ‘‘Kelly’? — the nickname
we tagged him with —- remember
Gene? — got all four feet into the
act.

Every four or five bars, he
paused and held up his left front
paw. Was it ‘‘No applause,
please’ or his version of Shuffle
Off to Buffalo.? .

Kelly’s paws are curiously form-
ed — or is it the result of 15 years
of dancing for his dinner? Instead
of compact, furry white toes, his
are splayed-out and long. They re-
ally tap out a beat. But probably
the oddest thing about Kelly’s
dancing: he changes his pace in tune
with the radio!

We violated our firm rule about
feeding other people’s animals,

Who can resist Kelly? Besides, |
checked with the neighbor who
told me Kelly is the neighborhood
mascot and everyone gives him a
pat or a bite to cat. And he clearly
belonged to good owners — both
his girth and expensive flea collar
told the story.

I'm curious that this was our
first’ meeting. Where has Kelly
been during the two years we've
owned the condo?

Next day, he was waiting for us
when we came back from lunch.
Same routine, We felt almost guil-
ty about returning home today.
How long will Kelly wait by our
kitchen door?

Gene Kelly would be proud of
his namesake.

Now, let's change the subject.
Toothpaste isn't the most exciting
topic for the new year, but I'm
sick of the regular prices for this
essential product. So sick, in fact,
that it's become my favorite
“Budget Beater.”
