FARLEY MOWAT
deserves a Standing ova-
tion.

I have been a fan of Faricy’s
for a long time and I can think of
any number of reasons for ap-
plauding the fearless fulminator,

work to his heroism in the Se-
cond World War, and let us not
forget his writing itself.

At his best, Farley is without
: doubt one of the finest writers in
the world, a true planetary voice.

But he has just done something
that it falls only to historic fig-
ures to do, not'as a rule mere
-wordsmiths. He has overthrown
one of the laws of the United

- law at that.

And in doing so he has, |
believe, moved humanity . one
small step further along the road

- towards an actual civilized state.

Washington.

Farley had been on his way to
California to flog one of his
cooks, Sea of Slaughter. A
Disney movie had just come out
based on his Never Cry Wolf. He
was hot copy. By bashing Farley,
the Yanks had made themselves
look like the moral equivalent of
seal-hunters.

Well, it was more serious than

that. A major international:

writer denied entry to a land that
prides itself noisily on being the
bastion of intellectual freedom?
Was it a plot by the anti-en-
vironmental forces within the
Reagan administration?

The most interesting tidbit to
emerge from the struggle that
followed, with the American
Civil Liberties Union on one side
and tight-lipped CIA types on the
other, was. the word from
Washington that whatever in-

formation was in Farley's file, it |

had been provided by the RCMP.

Farley felt vaguely stabbed in |

the back.

He was offered a chance to
quietly meet with American
border officials to arrange a
special visa, but to his eternal
credit, he not only told them to
stuff it, he said he was so insulted
he wouldn't go back to the Unit.

summarized versions of news highlights for the months
September through to December.

The first installment of the
two-part series appeared in the
Friday, Jan. § News and covered
January through to August 1987
and the major news events that oc-
curred in those months.
SEPTEMBER:
¢@ Horseshoe Bay brewery closes —
Five years after launching the first
brew pub -in...North America,
management for Horseshoe Bay's
Trolier Pub decided to pull the
plug on its Horseshoe Brewery,
citing continuing financial losses
and the possibility of the B.C.
government allowing imported
draught beer to be served in B.C.
pubs.

In. December, the brewery’s
former brew master announced he
would attempt to run the brewery
as an operation separate from the
pub.

Fire engulfs deck as world's
largest barge undergoes repairs —
Clouds of thick black smoke from
North Vancouver's Vancouver
Shipyards could be seen for miles
as a dock fire at the shipyard caus-
ed an estimated $500,000 damage.
Fire crews had the blaze quickly
under control. There were no inju-
ries.

© Escaped convict recaptured in
Horseshoe Say after manbunt —
Heavily armed police from North
Vancouver, West Vancouver and
Vancouver conducted a 15'4-hour
door-to-door search for an escaped
convict who had kidnapped 2
woman and. forced her to drive
across B.C. to West Vancouver. A
resident spotted the man and called
police. The man was arrested

without incident. Robert James
Watson was sentenced in
November to life imprisonment for
kidnapping and sexual assault.

© Search for missing hiker unsuc-
cessful — Ground and air sear-
chers failed to find even a trace of
61-year-old Carlo (Charlie) Musso,
who went missing on Seymour
Mountain: Labour Day after--ap-_
parently going for a hike there.
The search — which even had the
help of a psychic -— was called off
after seven days.

¢ Park and Tilford development
rezoning approved — After years
of negotiations and a number of
different design proposals, rezon-
ing for the ‘BCE Development
Corp.’s Park and Tilford shopping
centre and Cannell Studios’ movie
studio was approved. Other shopp-
ing centres also made news in

1987, with the Caulfeild Plaza —

opening its doors, and the an-
nouncement of a $25-million
shopping centre complex to be
built on Squamish indian Band
land in North Vancouver District.
SEPTEMBER:

© Neighbors bicker over proposed
low-income seniors housing project
in-West Vuscouver — Controversy
arose over a proposed three-storey,
45-unit, West Vancouver United
Church - project intended for the
1900-block of Esquimalt Ave. The
neighborhood is zoned single-fami-
ly residential... Residents expressed
concern about ‘density and increas-
ed traffic at'a packed public hear-
