Campbell states: ‘*Volun- teers have an essential role to play in the integration of mentally handicapped _ in- dividuals into all aspects of community life. A volunteer can provide the support to enable the handicapped citi- zen to take part in recre- ational activities and to par- ticipate in the many activities the rest of us take for granted. Every day living ac- tivities - riding the bus, go- ing to a bank, eating in a restaurant and joining a swim class - are all activities the volunteer and handi- capped can share and Jearn together. “Volunteers are valued both in support and training but also in the impact that they can make through their increased awareness of the nature of mental handi- caps."' These two volunteer workshops have been ar- ranged by the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre.
