A4 - Wednesday, May 30, 1984 - North Shore News DELEGATION SET NV City wi l hear from gas bar foes ALTHOUGH THE trend seems to be towards more self-serve gas stations, the move is not popular with the Automotive Retailers Associa- tion, which has been asked to appear as a delega- tion before North Vancouver City council. According to a submission from the Association, a ma- jor oil company has begun to eliminate service bays in many of its Lower Mainland gasoline outlets. Some stations are being closed completely, but most are being converted [to gas bars with a convenience store attached and the Association is concerned with the effect these changes will have on employment. If there is one particular pro- blem this City does not need at this time, it is unemployment, Association Baldwin. The Association is also concerned that the loss of reasonably priced automotive service facilities. “Gas bars and ‘conve- nience’ stores somehow don’t fit the image projected by oil company commercials of a dedication to servicing all of the motorists’ needs,’’ Baldwin felt. Baldwin predicted that these moves by one oil com- pany would likely be follow- ed by similar actions on the part of other companies. added wrote Director R.A. In fact, the trend is in quite the opposite direction. As the rate of population growth declines in the industrialized nations, the strength of the family unit has increased, divorces are down, pro- miscuity is out of favor, and males are far less domineer- ing than in any previous known age. Birth control, primitive and one-sided as it still may be, is the first step toward freedom. Ms. Greer is screeching against old walls, old ideas, old fears. She is out of touch with the times.
