By AL GRASS WINTER HAS many delights — the beauty of a snowflake, ‘‘shooshing’’ down mountain slopes or the simple pleasure of making a snowman. One winter out- door activity often over- looked is winter camping. In the past, winter camping was a real chore because of bulky, awkward and ineffi- cient equipment. Modern technology has provided us with the materials to make winter camping fun. The gear should be light- weight yet provide protection from cold temperatures, wind, rain and snow. Lightweight portables ovens are just right for warmth and cooking. Make sure, however, that your tent or R.V. has plenty of ventula- tion, if you plan to cook inside. Insulate yourself from the cold with high density foam sheets. Carry high energy foods. Many prepared freeze-dried meals are available from sporting goods shops. Drink plenty of hot liquids — soups are excellent. Avoid alcohol. It is a good idea to practise your winter camping skills close to civilization before venturing too far into the B.C. winter camping back-country on_ skis or snowshoes. Once you’ve gained sufficient skill and knowledge about winter cam- ping you might even try snow caving. Winter camping has many advantages over summer camping. One is that you avoid the crowds; another is a chance to see wildlife such as deer, moose, lynx and Gray Jays. B.C.’s provincial parks are open year-round for winter recreation. You may, however, find conditions on the primitive side owing to factors such as weather. Always be fully self- contained and prepared for extremes of weather. Never venture into unfamiliar back- country areas. One of the best places to try winter camping is Mann- ing Provincial Park, - 276 km east of Vancouver on Highway 3. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be combin- ed for a truly wonderful out- door experience. There are other parks where winter camping oc- curs, including Garibaldi (E]- fin Lakes Shelter), Wells Gray, Shuswap (has a winterized water system), Kokanee Creek, and Okanagan Lake.
