to public hearing

Zoning bylaw would bring curbs

RESIDENTS of North
Vancouver City are to get a
chance to express their views
on arcades.

Council on Monday gave a
draft zoning by-law
amendment its first reading
and agreed to set a date fora
public hearing.

One of the highlights of
the restrictions would be to
limit an arcade to a maxium
of eight amusements
machines.

The machines would also
not be allowed to form the
principal part of an arcade.

Alderman Elko Kroon was
concerned about having too
many restrictions. “If we
want good management of
arcades we have got to give
good management a chance
to make a good buck out of
it,” he said.

Alderman Frank Marcino
supported the new draft
restrictions, saying that

dangerous creature.”

attracted to arcades.

“What I'm trying to say is
most of the municipalities
don’t want arcades because
of people who congregate in
them and plot and plan.”

She worried that the
arcades might need extra
policing which would
ultimately cost taxpayers
money.

Acting Mayor Gary Payne
felt there are many aspects
of the subject that should be
considered further with
input from the public.

“I'm not convinced that
the draft bylaw we have
before us is the way to go,”
he concluded.

Alderman Ralph Hall
agreed and said: “I think it
appropriate that we go to the
public hearing and hear
representations at this time.”
