England humbled _ Big as

by soccer defeat

LONDON (UPI) - The
British sports press
described England’s shock 2-

1 defeat by Norway in Oslo
Wednesday as it’s most
humiliating since it lost 1-0
to the United States during
the 1950 World Cup. in
Brazil. .

“If the midsummer defeat
by Switzerland in Basel was a
disaster, then capitulation in
Oslo was a disgrace, beyond
reasonable excuse, the most
painful World Cup
humiliation in the 31 years
since England were beaten
by the United States in Belo
Horizonte” said the Daily
Mail. ,

England’s defeat in a
Group 4 qualifying match
almost certainly means it
will miss out on the World
Cup Finals in Spain next year
- for the third successive
tournament.

It was its first ever defeat
by Norway which it had
beaten in its five previous
matches with a goal tally of
24-2.

England still has a remote
mathematical possibility of
qualifying.

But as Frank McGee in ~
wrote, .

“Even- if. England wins its
remaining match against
Hungary it may not qualify.
Frankly that would be no
surprise and no harsher a
punishment than the team
and Ron Greenwood
deserve.

“I cannot remember a
more inept performance by
an England team in 30 years

commented, “England were
as bad, perhaps even worse
than when losing against

Switzerland last May.”
