mailbox Dear Editor: Your lead story for the September 3 edition (Illegal Suites Hunt on in WV) states “The mayor stressed that people live in West Van- couver because they value the peace and tranquillity” as if to suggest that, somehow, illegal suites disrupt neighbourhood peace and tranquillity. I'd be most interested in hearing the mayor's logic in making this inherent assumption. Perhaps he believes that only hooligans would occupy anything other than a self- contained, single-family dwelling. My point is that we hooligans can rarely afford our own homes. The income earned from _ pitching pennies and leaning against lamp standards hardly begins to cover the down-payment on a first mortgage these days. And there is only marginal profit in tripping old-age pensioners and nudging baby carriages into oncoming traffic any more. The result is that we have been forced into occupying cheaper basement suites and Open-ended in indexing irresponsible Dear Editor: Recent reports and editorials concerning the government's pension legislation have carried a misleading emphasis which needs correcting. Under the new legislation there will be no open-ended or unlimited indexing. In- dexing will not reach 15-per cent nor any amount near that figure. Rather, indexing will remain limited by the ac- tual amount of money paid into special accounts design- ed for inflation indexing. In comparing _ teachers’ and government employees’ plans it must be realized that the two differ according to the mix of active and retired employees and the way each plan is actually funded. The government employ- ces’ plan is in better financial shape than the teachers’ plan. it has almost no un- fair and reasonable that an adjustment be made to con- tributions to the government employees’ inflation fund. In the future, pensions will only be adjusted up to the amount of money set aside for that purpose, therefore, indexing will not be open- ended, instead it will reflect financial responsibility. In the case of teachers, their fund will afford about 8 per cent of inflation, while government employees’ will afford almost 10 per cent (mot the speculative 15 per cent). I had only one purpose in mind in proposing the pen- sion amendments — to en- sure that teachers, college employees, and public ser- vants at both the provincial and municipal level have securely financed pensions. The concept of open- attic bedrooms. People like Humphreys are creating a real problem for us. In a few years there will be nowhere we can live, free to rinse our oilpans in the neighbour's rose garden or stumble over the lan- dlord’s barbecue at three in the morning. But we have to live somewhere. I feel that West Vancouver shares, with all the other greater Vancouver districts, the responsibility for alleviating the hooligan housing crisis. The only lation ended inflation indexing of pensions is unreasonable and irresponsible. It would force governent to provide unlimited funding of public service pensions at unlimited cost to the taxpayers of this province, whose own pen- sion plans often pall by com- Parison. Instead, long-term finan- cial security has been achieved with both govern- ment and employees recognizing the need for fiscal responsibility. It is to this end that teachers have been invited to discuss pen- sion funding and I hope that it will quash any notion that the goyernment is = more receptive to protestors at the legislature than to frank and responsible discussions.
