Complaints against police simplified

For citizens who may, at
some time, have a complaint
against the police a four-step
procedure is explained in a
new, simplified brochure
issued by the B.C. Police
Commission.

The first step is to talk to
the complaints officer at
police headquarters, who
will investigate and try to
settle the matter. This pre-
liminary approach, says the
brochure, is informal,

usually simple, often quick
and proves satisfactory 90
per cent of the time.

If not satisfied, however,
the next step is to make a
formal written complaint.
The pohce chief or his
delegate will investigate and
there may be a disciplinary
“hearing.

Should you still not be
satisfied, you can demand a
public hearing of your
complaint by the com-

munity’s police board — a
civilian body.

If you disagree with the
board’s decision, you can
appeal to the B.C. Police
Commission.

In the case of a complaint
against the RCMP the first
two steps are the same. Bul
if you are dissatisfied with
the decision of the RCMP
officer al stage two, you may
appeal — with the approval
of the provincial attorney-

general — directly to the
B.C. Pohce Commission.

This is because
RCMP, unhke municipal
police forces, are not
directly answerable to a
community police board.
