Help’s at hand HELP’S AT Hand, a weekly feature by North Shore Com- munity Services, answers questions about and discusses such topics as government policies and pro- grams, benefits, consumer and legal rights, taxation and public services. eee Question: [will be 65 in January, am active and in good health. [ have a good job which t enjoy, and 1 would like to keep working for several more years in order to keep contributing to my Canada Pension Plan. My employer can guarantee me work until the end of June, at which time [ will ‘be laid off. 1 heard that there Wave been changes to the Unemployment Insurance program for people 65 and over. Could you tell me how these might affect me? Answer: There have been significant changes to the Unemployment Insurance. The most notable change for older adults is that benefits no longer end at the age of 65. They will be paid just the same way as they would to someone under 65, and your employer will continue to collect premiums from employees 65 and over. Because you are now covered by Unemployment In- surance after the age of 65, the old system of being able to collect a lump sum when you reached the age of 65, has been eliviinated. If you are laid off in June, as you mention in your question, you will be entitled to receive Unemployment Insurance benefits, as long as you can show that you are actively looking for another job and have fulfilled the other el- igibility criteria. Question: I gether there is a telephone line where you can get information on how the new Goods ard Services Tax will affect the consumer. I just don’t seem to be able to find the number. Can you help? Answer: The number you need is 1-800-668-2122. You may also ask to have the consumer’s guide to the.GST mailed to you. The booklet tells you how the GST is likely to affect the prices of con- sumer merchandise.
