Beach pollution chronic health hazard

Warning signs have been posted
“at the beach for more than three
weeks because of the high fecal
coliform: counts recorded in the
area. | ; ;

A-reading taken on June 24 by
North Shore Health showed a col-

iform count of 460 parts per 100
millilitres of water. The highest
acceptable limit is 200.

“We have had some heavy
rains. The rain flushes pollutants
into the closest water source. If
the water discharges into an area
close to a fairly poorly flushed
beach, then you get a problem,”
said North Shore Health en-
vironmenta] health director Bill
Kimmett.

The Eagle Harbour beach col-
iform count escalated from 122,
on May 27, to 250 on June 3.
