14 ~ North Shore News ~ Friday, February 25, 2000 CALENDAR NEWS photo Jutle werson TUESDAY evening life-drawing sessions organized by artist Donna Bentley are among the activities at Lower Lonsdale’s new Artist Trce Studios, which rents studio space to visual and performing artists. Tree rt Layne Christensen News Reporter Ichris- tensen@nsnews.com ARTIST Tree Studios has more than floor- space for rent. The new business enter- prise aims to be a major player in Lower Lonsdale’s emerging arts community, says founder Debra Drayton. “This place is ideally situ- ated in time as well as loca- tion to be a part of a really strong, growing, visual arts community,” says Drayton, who leased the 4,000 square-foot two-level space in the old Empire Theatre building on West First Street in North Vancouver Jan. 1. Artist Tree is located on the first two floors of the pale grey building, halfa block west of Lonsdale, in ois an expansive space formerly occupied by public relations and special events firm World Tribe, which has con- solidated its operations into a smaller office next door. The lofty second-storey space lends itself to special events such as dance and movement workshops or theatrical performances, while the ground-floor space, which includes an Office area, kitchen, bath- room and lounge is ideal for the creation, show and sale of art, says Drayton. The 46-year-old North Shore resident traded a career in interior design for fine arts LO years ago and now wants to fulfill a dream by creating a haven for artists. Artists can rent work- space for $2.25 a square foot, about $225 a month for a 10°x10° open-plan Ga Ge ee ed 00% Multi-Rater GIC ; 7 RP Ce | fiver | 30a 6.00% & “First year rate, includes 1% bonus when deposited in your RSP. Drayton also hopes to offer flexible rates for artists who may want to use the facility on a less regular basis. But more than a work environment, Artist Tree is meant to be a gathering place for artists. “The idea is to make a strong arts presence on the North Shore. It’s about getting artists out of isolation and debunking the myth that there is no money in the arts,” says Drayton. “We want a more social envi- ronment and we need a place where potential purchasers can come to view art.” While the arts community is slow to discover the space — just one artist, fresco painter Heidi Rolfe, is cur- rently renting ‘space there — Drayton hopes Artist Tree will soon be a hub of activi- ty. Already, a small group of artists are gathering Tuesday evenings for life-drawing classes with Donna Bentley, and an artists’ “show and tell” is planned for the first Saturday of each month.
