Alcohol involved, no Weapons involved, 2. Lynnwood Hotel Fight. Three men were arrested after refusing to leave bar. Held in custody until sober. 3. 15th & Lonsdale Assault. Two woman accepted ride from nwo men. One of the men made unwanted and uninvited sexu- al advances towards one of the women. Investigation contin- ues. 4. 1600-btk. Dempsey Rd. Fight between room mates. One male arrested and taken into custody. No alco- hol or weapons involved. 5. Lynn Valley Mall Theft. An adult mate was stopped by liquor store employee. A fight resulted and cmployee was injured. The suspect fled in a white Toyota pickup. August 30 6. 1900-blk. Marine Dr. - Fight. Two women intoxi- cated and fighting. .No injuries, both sent home with warnings. 7. 1400-bik. East 29th Street -» Domestic dispute. Adult male; making threats to light Unfortunately for the bears this usually results in their death. Bears are being needlessly killed — close to 1,000 this year — because of people’s carelessness, says the office. The situation in some areas _ has become critical. It is an extraordinary situa- tion and the public’s help and cooperation are needed to ensure that as few “problem garbage bears” as possible have tobe destroyed to maintain public safety. ~ . . Bears have been starved out of their. usual food sources by an unusually hot and dry sum- mer, and they are moving in increasing numbers into popu- fated areas in their search for food. People’s carelessness and negligence in handling their garbage attracts bears into what too often becomes a fatal con- flict with humans. Conservation officers are reluctant to destroy bears that are getting into garbage duc to human negligence, but they” are forced to take steps neces- sary to protect the public. Officers continue to report cases of people feeding bears, 2 misguided: action that poses a serious threat to public and — things on fire and packing clothes into car. Once bears are used to find- ing food in a populated area, they can get very aggressive in pursuing . Bears have been own to climb through an open window to eat a fresh berry pie cooling on a kitchen table. One bear climbed three flights of stairs and ripped through a screen door to get at food. Bears this aggressive have lost their fear of humans and have to be destroyed. People — especially in the current situation — must tike extra care with potendal food sources that attract bears to their homes, such as garbage, fruit trees, bechives, pet food and barbecue grills. There are a number of pos- itive actions people can take immediately that will help co save the lives of bears: BM sccrrcly store garbage indoors until pickup; @ ensure compost bins and other potential food sources are secured in containers; @ wash barbecue grills after use. Cover and store barbecues securely; @ pet food should be securely stored; §& don’t pur meat, fish or ani- mal! parts in compost bins; Bi don’t throw cooking oil and grease outside; @ pick fruit as it ripens; M thin trees to create a break in natural pathways; M@ protect bechives, compost, livestock and fruit wees with electric fencing if passibic.
