Adolescence times two Preschoolers and young teens display eerily similar behavior IF parents feel better knowing they’re all in the same boat, in the absence of parental life jackets it’s helpful to know when rough waters can be predicted. Predictable and almost identical patches of rough seas in the parenting voyage generally occur when kids hit preschool age and the pre- to early-teen years. These times are sometimes referred to as the first and second adolescence. It would be fairly easy to write a book on what to expect of the teenage adolescent stage — just review the goals of preschool behavior and apply teen examples. It goes the other way, too. Independence-seeking behavior in teens is usually foreshadowed by examples taken straight from the same kid's toddler years, only this time the child can- not be removed physically into “time out.” I have read that those personality traits you have a hard time dealing with during your child's preschool years will be the same ones that rear their ugly heads in adolescence. In a recent teen’s parenting group a mom related her dis- cussion of my last column with her fourteen-year-old. I described parents as people who change overnight from people who know everything to those whe know nothing when their children hit fourteen. Her daughter replied: “Mom, I alw: Ng. It just tuok me fourteen years tO ECL NEXT WEEK WEEK > International Film Festival coverage > film and TV Trade Forum >> Theatre reviews >> Braun coffeemaker contest winners recipes >> Night of Worldly Delights preview emotional. 3 growth. 4 up the nerve to tell you.” The mother continued by telling us how she remembered this know-it-all attitude from an incident when the daughter was three. The daughter asked whether she had been a breast fed or formula fed baby. When mom told her she was breast fed the little girl replied indig- nantly, “Well, | wanted formula.” The personality of the nwo- to four-year-old is often described as irrational and unpredictable, a turbulent struggle for independence. Behaviors include ranting, raving and the con- tinuous testing of their parents’ tolerance. Cross out “the two- to four-year-old” and sub- stitute “early teens,” and the description remains amazingly accurate. In both cases our goal as parents is to get through these times of difficult bur predictable behavior and to help foster our children’ eventual independence without compromising their se esteem. There is a purpose for those stormy stages of emotional growth and in most cases the end result is an autonomous, emotionally healthy, responsible full-grown person. It's hard to imagine when you're in the thick of it, but the experts agree that these are temporary stages of typical development and most parents and children usually make it through them suc- cessfully.
