Looking at the present through eyes of the past Dear Editor: You may recal! that [ve been critical of dear old Doug a few times in the past. Reading a the Nov. 19 News, the thought came to me that perhaps, what Doug and his generation were fighting for wasn’t quite what they got from all that. And maybe that explains his dissatisfaction with the world of ruday, and our ridiculous governments adding to the confusten, As Doug points out, the world of the Flaming Forties was a vastly different one from today’s. While he was getting shot at over there, T was a kid ped- dling the Toronto Star in a little one-horse town in Northern Ontario, and using my spare change to buy War Savings Stamps. Gas and tires were rationed, along with sugar and other things, and for a couple of years there, nobody could buy a new car fur love nor money, because all the production was going into the war effort. Even getting new tires for my bike to keep on delivering the papers was a problem. And in those days, young people amused themselves at the Saturday-night sock-hops in the high school gym, danc- ing to the big bands of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artic Shaw, and others. The world was a different place back then, for sure. So perhaps Doug can be forgiven for being so unhappy with the world of the ‘90s. None of us back then even dreamt it might be like this, of course. And for all our technological wonders, the world of today isn’t anything like we’d hoped it might be. That much, I know for sure. And I’m all for remembering the “bad old days” — but 1 must add that November 11th is a hell of a poor choice for a guy’s birthday. J will presume you will know the difference. Are you a councillor? or, do you feel that you have been elected as a counsellor? My suggestion is that you return to the process of council- man and assist in the manage- ment of North Vancouver District.
