owboy Way sends icks to New York City Tim ‘Bell FILM REVIEW The Cowboy Way HH (Universal) Rated Mature (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Coqguitiam, Station Square, Clearbrook and Willowbrook Cinemas) HEWIN’ TABACCY, bronco bust- ing, and Pace picante sauce are just three things that don’t belong in New York City. The Cowboy Way offers you two more. Woody Harrelson takes a major step away from his most famous role.as Cheers’ good ol’ boy rodeo whiz. You can tell it’s a brand new character by the | cowboy hat, the tequiia drinking and slangy retorts like “If it’s got hair on it, | can ride it.” He even drawls that he’s a “bizniz man,” a bad one according to his ema- ciated wallet. The plot finds this grammati- cally challenged cowboy head- ing for New York City, his first time east of Tulsa. He’s there to find a pal and his daughter who strayed too far from the herd. Along for the gallop is his loyal CRITICS’ childhood partner, Sanay iKeifer Sutherland). Actually, it’s Sonny who instigates the chase, but you would never know from the way Woody strolls off with the movie with more mugging than Central Park on a Saturday night. Next to him, Keifer looks not only logey but downright cata- tonic. To sell this mongrel to the 15- year-old boys, there are socialite women salivating over Pepper's (Harrelson’s) rough appeal. (Hmm, what mature woman doesn’t want to have salt ticked frorn her throat by a yobbo?) And, of course, there are 66 It inay be time for the sun to set on all these westerns Hollywaod has been churning out of late.... From time to time, whenever the script gets into a tight corner, Ernie Hudson (you know him from Ghostbusters) conveniently pops up as a mounted policeman to fulfill his wish to play cowboy. The Fugitive % tc (Warner Video) Rated Mature Although this movie plays hetter on the big screen, the little moments that made ita cut above the usual action picture remain untouched, The cat-and- mouse games between the fugi- tive Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) and the relent- less Deputy Marshal Sam Gerard escalate from routine manhunt to grudging mutual respect. Tommy Lee Jones deserved this Oscar in the film’s best per- formance, bringing a wryness to a character that, on the series, was a colorless but deter- mined op. (His reports must have made depressing read- ing — “Chased Kimble. Nearly had him. Try again next week,”) The identity of the villain who hired the one-armed man to kill Kimble’s wife won't surprise mystery buffs and at over two hours, the movie is too long. However, thanks to Ford’s and jones’ fine chemistry and Andrew Davis’ taut direction, The Fugitive out- distances any other action pic- ture of the last few years.
