IT'S AMAZING that Al Lynch doesn’t have night-
mares about people lossing broken bicycles, wisted
lawnmowers and other inappropriate items into blue
boxes meant for recycling,

After all, the coordinator of the North Shore
Recycling Program lives and breathes the three Rs —
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. ;

A job like that could haunt a person, but Lynch puts
a positive spin on his favorite topic and says he's

impressed by the enthusiasm with which the North -

Shore has taken up the environmental challenge.
‘The North Shore Recycling Program is one of the
most successful of the 18 currently operating in the
GVRD, he said.-

Contamination levels of materials in the blue boxes
are low, Last month alone, trucks hauled away 935 met-
tic tonnes of recyclable material from apartments and

“.-. Newspapers, he noted, comprise 75% of this materi-

al. The North Shore has been recycling its newspapers
for 15-20 years, Lynch said. The paper is sent away to
be de-inked, then turned back into pulp and made into
fresh newsprint.

In some areas of the U.S., daily newspapers must
legally be made up of 20% recycled pulp. He added that
Canada isn’t quite as progressive. But the world is
slowly changing, and/so is the North Shore,

“We're Irying to promote waste reduction as
opposed to just recycling,” he said. :

One of the best ways of coaserving fand{ill space is
the backyard composter, “That's waste reduction at the
source.”

It's also proving to be surprisingly popular. The
North Shore Recycling Program has sold 8, nua com
posters in the past four years.

Lynch said apartment dwellers —~ 96% of whom
use the blue box program — may noi be able to accom-
modate composters, but many are considering worm
composting. ‘There are a few disadvantages to this recy-
cling method, he admits, not the least of which is that
“A lot of people don't like worms,”

Lynch points out that some West Vancouver resi-

dents have complained.about the recently-imposed ’

three-can garbage pick-up limit.

“There is a facility by the Transfer Station at 30
Riverside Dr.” he said. “Any North Shore resident is
entitled to take up to 200 ky (440i ibs.) of yard waste or
clean wood waste there for free.”

That material is chipped on-site and taken out to a
company called Environmental Industries in Matsqui,
where itis mixed with agricultural waste: and then re-
sold to the public as The Answer garden rroducts,
Alternatively, it is turned iato high-grade topsoil and
sold to residential and landscape gardeners. “That clos-
es the loop,” said Lynch, .

By this summer. there will also be a new recycling
drop-off depot by the Transfer Station which will accept
a wide range of items, including magazines, boxes, junk
mail, computer paper, metals, food and beverage con-
tainers, mattresses, carpels and possibly even used
clothing. There will be an environmental education cen-
tre staffed by volunteers at the same site, Lynch said.
