The following care and han- dling techniques will enhance the enjoyment you receive from your Valentine roses. If your roses are delivered in a box, open it immediately and give the roses some attention. If you don’t have time (if you are on the go or at.work), put them in a cool, dark place such as a hall closet or a refrigerator, until you can pro- perly care for-them. When you are ready to ar- range the roses, remove any leaves that might be under the water line wher placed in a container, Be careful not to scrape or cut the bark. A powdery preservative should be included with the roses. Mix it with warm water and put it in the vase. Your florist will provide rose preser- vative for you. Using a sharp knife or shears, cut an inch off the stem while holding it under water. It is important to keep air from blocking the flow of water to the head of the bud. Finally, place your roses in a deep vase with the preservative water, and make sure you place your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heat or drafts. If your roses come arranged, you can follow the same pro- cedures. Make sure the roses have plenty of water and preservative each day.
