I have two children, both now in their 40s. I have been keeping company with a lady friend for some time and recently we have started to discuss the subject of marriage. It seems only natural since we enjoy each other’s company and have so much in common that we should want to spend the rest of our lives together. Something that has really been worrying me though, is how I make sure that when I die my estate goes to my children aud doesn’t just become part of my new wife's estate. She also has grown up children but she does not have very much property or money to leave. I want to make sure that she will be able to live comfortably in our own house for the rest of her life, but I don’t feel that I have to be con- cerned about her adult children after her death. Answer: This situation is becoming more and more common these days, and your concern is quite natural. You should probably consult a notary public or a lawyer and come to some legal understanding about these issues prior to marry- ing. You may be advised to draw up a contract. : In addition, you may want to explore different methods of own- ing any property. For instance, most married couples own their home jointly, as joint tenants. If one of them dies, the ownership of the house goes to the surviving joint-tenant. It does not become of the estate and therefore is not subject to distribution accord- ing to the instructions of the will. Another way of owning property is called tenancy in common. This method allows each partner to own at hand a share of the house and leave his share to beneficiaries. In your case you might wish to prepare a last will and testament which stipulates that your wife is protected by a life tenancy in the house, known as a grant of life estate, meaning that she can live in the house during her lifetime but, on her death, the ownership of your share of the house goes to your children. This is something to think about even if you already own a house. A notary or lawyer can explain what type of ownership you currently have, and can help you if you wish to change it. Please also remember that any will that you have before marriage will automatically become null and void when you marry, so the preparation of a new will is im- perative. wee The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre, a United Way agency, is located at 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, B.C. The United Church Co-operative Playschool, which later became the Wee Folk Playschool, was formed in 1947. A_ rival, the Pixie Playschool, opened three years later. It, too, changed its name. After 10 years in operation, Pixie became the Hollyburn Co- operative Playschool. In 1965, following years of lob- bying, Hollyburn moved to its cur- rent premises, the fieldhouse near Dundarave Pier. - Four years later, its metamor- phosis was complete when Holiyburn amalgamated with the Wee Folk. Since then, its scenic location near the waterfront and the BC Rail tracks has been popular with children and filmmakers, too — scenes from the 1988 feature film Cousins, starring Ted Danson, were shot at the fieldhouse.
