There’s a rewarding doctoral thesis to be drawn irom « close analysis of the obsessive lyrical concerns of Black Francis (aka Charles Micahel Kitridge). Pixie probing aside, Black and the Pixies posse are due for their first Van- couver show Nov. 4 at the Com- modore, with guest Bob (ex- Hukser Du) Mould. Music Now recentiy spoke with Pixies bassist Kim Deal. MICHAEL * BECKER record review A collision of style and content ultimately makes this band’s special subversion seductive. Ac- cording to Deal, the Pixies song- crafting process begins with Kitridge tossing out chord pro- gressions. The group collectively refines an arrangement and then Kitridge, gifted with a singularly oblique perspective derived from a “Jow-level constant nervous breakdown,” layers on the words. And so, the listener is presented with the resoundingly horrific, as in the Doolittle album’s Gouge Away — “... sleeping on your belly; you break my arms; you spoon my eyes; been rubbing a bad charm; with holy fingers...’ But the creative crunch is found beyond the ghoulish, an attitude which Kitridge happens to wear well. It comes when the band spins out songs that with a cursory listening sound like facile surfer- pop lightweights. Set against 2 lur- ching, wheediing guitar presence and Kitridge’s primal screams from the monkey cage, even the most mundane of lyrics, like La La Love You's mantra “’... all I’m saying pretty baby; la la love you, don‘t mean maybe...”” turn remarkably threatening. with shitake mushrooms. Just how did a young woman like Deal hapren upon this madness? Said Deal, ‘‘We're from different places. Joe (lead guitarist Joey Santiago) and Charles (Black Francis) went to university in Amherst. They met as college room-mates and they dropped out of school ancl moved to Boston. They knew they wanted to start a band. | was there. | had just moved there from Ohio in 1986. ! was in Boston for about a week when | saw an ad that said they were looking fer a female bass player for music somewhere along the lines of Husker Du and Peter, Paul and Mary. it was the only ad | answered and | was the only one who answered the ad.” She traded in her guitar for a bass and brought along a friend (Pixies drummer David Lovering) for the ride. The path first led to England. where the band inked a deal with the progressive 4AD label. “We nad opened up for the Throwing Muses at a club called SUSHI HAPPY HOUR | aN ROSA *N OF ORIGINAL CLASSIC SUSHIS iSeiwete PREPARED ALL SUSHI so1c005m” Try our rainbow roll — a deliciously colourful roll of sea-eel. cucumber, salmon, snapper, egg and spinuch, of mushroom sushi Wide selection of Japanese dishes incl.
