RUST IS the most visible car ail-
ment.

Triggered by a variety of factors
— scratches, dents, penetration of
salt deposited on roads during
winter and seeping moisture from
sources unknown — rust quickly
destroys a car’s body.

Surface rust causes pitting of
exposed metal surfaces and proper
repair requires metal work. Many
automotive body designs cause dirt
and moisture to accumulate cn the
underside of a panel, promoting
rust-through. The rust on the
underside is always more extensive
than is apparent.

To keep your car rust-free, auto
experts recommend preventive
maintenance.

Protect it from the elements and
rain and snow deposit particles
that damage the body.

Sun and heat bake it, taking a
toll on the finish.

If you have a garage, clean it out
and put your car inside. If you car
must stay outside, get a protective
cover. Treat nicks and scratches
immediately. Light scratches and
marks can be removed by using
rubbing compound.

For nicks, apply touch-up paint
as soon as possible to protect the
damaged area, and give your car a
bath often.

Remove road tar and grease. If
it snows in your area, make sure
you remove all the road salt. Flush
dirt from wheel wells and give the
car a thorough waxing.

The best choice of repair is to
cut out as much of the rust as
possible and weld in a new piece of
steel. However, dirt and water
trapping automotive designs do

not allow for a permanent solu-
tion. With small rust-through, an
option to grind away visible rust
