“46 - Friday,’ March 24; 1989 = Get wild at the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre WILDLIFE WEEK at Lynn Can- yon Ecology Centre, March 25 tc April 2, coincides with spring break for local students. In past years, children have en- joyed hands-on experiences with box turtles and gopher snakes, admired a wolf and a family of baby squirrels and banded wild birds for educational purposes. This year’s Wildlife Week prom- ises even more hands-on workshops, talks, walks and slide shows by Vancouver wildlife groups. A snowgoose will be the guest of honor, April 1, at 2 p.m., with two biologists, a Canadian and a Soviet, on hand for the discussion. Call 987-5922 for more informa- tion. Other activities at the centre in- clude Birder Field Trips led by naturalist and bird watcher Kevin Bell. On March 26 Bell leads an ex- pedition through Maplewood Flats, a local salt marsh system that is the last of its kiad on the North Shore. The flats support large numbers of ducks, shorebirds and small birds. Participants mect at I p.m. at the mudflats. Pre-registration is required, and fieid glasses and proper are recommended. All of the children’s artwork from the Threatened Wildlife of B.C. Poster Contest will be sold at the Wildlife Art Auction, 2 te 5 p.m., Sunday, April 30 at the Cent tre. Sixty of the most colorful and thoughtful posters will be lami- nated and auctioned at the auction block, and the rest sold for a min- imum 50 cent donation. Proceeds from the auction go to the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C., @ non-profit organization which cares for injured, orphaned and pollution damaged wild animais with the intention of returning then to nature. The an- nual cascload of the rescue association is about 3,000 animals of 115 species. He will show how each anima! is adapted depending on what it eats. “Tees., March 28 — How Smart are ‘Hummingbirds? — 2 p.m. — Dr. Lee Gass from the UBC Zoology Dept. will give a slide-show about the behavior and intelligence of hummingbirds.
