Youth arts project launched A NORTH Shore art project for youth, including an artist-run gallery, arts education classes and workshops, will help fill the void in arts programs and services cur- tently available to youth, says the project's creator, Irwin Oostindie. Called Youth Art Works!, the Project includes a facility where youth, aged 15 to 24 can discuss, learn and work on art projects in a comfortable peer environment. Oostindie, from North Van- couver, said depending on provin- cial and municipal funding, the centre could open as carly as May. “By the beginning of March we should know for sure,*’ he said, adding that he is confident the Project vil receive enough funds as it qualifies as a community pro- ject. Thousands of young people liv- ing on the North Shore miss out on the chance to develop their artistic potential, said Oostindic, because local arts groups are swamped with existing activities, “There aren't enough programs for young people to learn about the arts,"' he said, ‘tall there is right now is Presentation House and the Community Arts Coun- cil,"* explaining that Youth Art Works will give them the chance to work together to develop their ideas. Workshops will explore various subjects such as introductory painting, poetry readings, arts in the community, photography, cre- ative layout, fashion illustration, experimental video and film works, The gallery allows young people to hang their works in a public forum, and young artists will also have access to frames loaned by the Youth Art Works Society. Local artists will conduct the workshops and lectures, and Emily Carr, Capilano College, and Simon Fraser University fine art students will offer basic workshops, said Oostindic. After a minimal membership fee, all workshops and basic mate- rials will be free. For more infor- mation contact Irwin Oostindie at 1509 Merlynn Cres., North Van- couver, V7J 2X9. Youth Art Works is also seeking input from local groups and individuals. A meeting is scheduled for March 7 at 7:30 p.m at the North Van- couver Chamber of Commerce, 131 E. 2nd.
