28 ~ Friday, October 14, 1988 - North Shore News From page 27 aerodynamic, the body of the MPV is rigid as well. This rigidity is the result of Mazda’s Dynamic Modal Analysis and extensive computer-aided design, giving the MPV a solid, stable feel, quiet in- terior and impressive ride, comfort, and handling. The standard powerplant in the new MPV is an all-new 2.6 litre, 12-valve, in-line four cylinder with electronic fuel-injection and twin counter-rotating balance shafts developed specifically for use in the MPV. A single overhead cam- shaft operates the two intake and one exhaust valves per cylinder via quiet and maintenance-free hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Three valves per cylinder im- prove engine performance especially in the low- and mid-rpm ranges. The fuel-injection allows excellent throttle response and fuel economy, while the twin balance shafts enhance engine smoothness and quietness. ‘The 2.6 litre engine produces 121 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 151 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. MOT fuel economy ratings for this engine are 23 mpg City and 29 mpg Highway with the five- speed manual transmission; and 22 mpg City and 29 mpg Highway with the optional four-speed over- drive automatia transmission. The 3.0 litre, 18-valve, overhead cam V-6 engine used in the Mazda 929 luxury sedan is optional on the MPY. This engine also features three vaives per cylinder — two in- take and one exhaust — for im- proved engine breathing and tor- que. Electronic fuel-injection and an advanced variable induction hydraulic valve lash adjusters en- sure quiet, maintenance-free operation. Output for the 3.0 litre powerplant is 150 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 165 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. For this engine,- MOT fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg City and 26 mpg Highway with the four-speed. overdrive automatic transmission. A five-speed manual is standard . ; on the four-cylinder engine in the MPV. This transmission is based on the five-speed found in the RX-7 Turbo. . Optional on the 2.6 litre four- cylinder models is a hydraulically- controlled four-speed automatic transmission. This transmission features an overdrive fourth gear and a lockup torque converter for improved fuel economy and reduced engine noise and wear. An_ electronically-controlled four-speed overdrive automatic transmission is standard with the’ V-6 engine in the MPY. The elec- tronic control permits smoother shifts and lockup torque converter engagement. There are three driver-selected operating modes in this transmission -Power, Economy and Hold. : The Power mode allows shift . points at higher rpms for improved acceleration, while the Economy mode selects the optimal shift points for smoother engine opera- tion and enhanced fuel economy. The Hold mode may be used to select and hold each of the three lower gears manually. A pushbut- ton on the gear selector engages the Hold mode. In designing the suspension of the MPV, the engineers at Mazda sought to provide a balance of precise handling, comfortable ride and load carrying capability. As a result, the MPV features compact MacPherson struts in front and a live axle with five links and coil springs at the rear. ' Anti-roll bars are fitted front and rear for flatter cornering. An automatic load leveling system is part of the optional trailer towing package (available only on the V-6 . equipped seven passenger models) that maintains an even vehicle height under varying loads. The MPV features a_ rear- wheel-drive layout for improved handling and improved trailer tow- ing capacity. The MPV has a tow- ing capacity of 2,300 pounds (1,040 kg) with the 2.6 litre engine and 2,600 pounds (1,180 kg) with the 3.0 litre V-6. With the optional towing package, the towing capacity of the V-6 equipped MPV increases to 4,300 pounds (1,950 kg). The tow- ing package consists of a heavy- duty engine cooling fan, an automatic transmission cooler, automatic load leveling and a full-size spare tire. The 4WD model, which will be (ae added in spring of 1989, allows the driver to easily select two- or four-wheel-drive. In the 2WD mode, an automatic front wheel and free-wheeling mechanism en- sures quiet and economical opera- _ tion. The 4WD system features an See New Page 29 For a limited time only at Jim Pattison Toyota every. used car or truck sold will have Secure-A-Car® AT NO EXTRA COST PONTIAC TRANS : 886288 SUPRA 88853A 888454 : 4692 CAMRY AM TOYOTA TOYOTA 4 RUNNER PONTIAC GRAN PRIX TOYOTA TOYOTA SUPRA TOYOTA B.U.
