The Aug. 19 flood caused serious damage to many of the 200,000 books and periodicals stored on the two lower floors of the library's main branch at 750 Burrard St. So far, the library has managed to replace all of National Geographic, including series dating back to as early as 1920, all of Equinox, from September 1987 to August 1988, and all of the Peking Review, from 1971 to 1987, through public donation. It has also managed to recover ali of Backpacker Magazine and all of the Canadian Alpine Journal. However, the library still needs help in replacing other books, especially sports periodicals, said VPL director Madge Aalto. “Pm troubled about the sports periodicals. For some reason — either they don’t keep them (sports magazines) or don’t want to part with them — _ people aren’t responding,"’ said Aalto.
