SUMMERTIME. — atime for vacations, relaxation and,

Big, amiable Chet (John Candy)’

takes his family to a backwoods
cabin where he plans to kick off
his shoes and get in some quality
bonding time with his two sons.
The older boy prefers cruising the
town where he quickly falls for a
local waitress.

As if this disruption isn’t
enough, Chet’s thoroughly obnox-
ious brother-in-law, Roman (Dan
Aykroyd), has arrived uninvited
with his annoying family. Under
Roman’s leaden hand, simple hot
dog barbecues become lobster tail
spreads, and boatings turn into
high-speed waterskiing episodes —
all at Chet’s expense, of course.

The continuous meddling drives “

Chet and his wife (Stephanie
Faracy) around the twist, but their
inherent niceness stops then from
telling off their tormentors, until
90 almost-laughless minutes have
passed. Even then, it doesn’t help.
Roman has to have an unlikely ..

~ turnaround and become a decent

dad and friend before relief arrives
in the form of the end credits.

. After reading John Hughes’ er-
ratic script, director Howard
Deutch must have thought the cast
could make it work. Admittedly,
Candy and Faracy share a couple

of likeable moments and Ackroyd ~

plays his stock Saturday Night
character as well as he did in
Neighbors.

However, even their herculean
efforts can’t raise this dud from -:
the grave. Scenes are left with
punchlines dangling, the boring
subplot with Chet’s son is irrele-
vant and, perhaps, most pointless
are inserts of raccoons with pain- |

‘IT fully unfunny subtitles. :

-Considering the talent involved,
this is a major disappointment that
could easily be retitled The Great
Outhouse. .

strangers extend mercy and self-
ishness towards Mason in equal

Man, this is one of the most mov-
ing suspense stories available.
