KRSPs by a TKO Now that the weeping and gnashing of teeth has subsided, the aftermath of Octobar's stock market blowout for more politely, re-alignment) lingers ~ for some much more than others, If anything, it has generally created a significant. ammount of uncertainty about economic growth. Even the ex- perts are seriously entertaining the spectre of another “crash” and the ultimate question remains unanswered -- up or down ? Which way will the market go now? In the short term? The long term? The recent October “crash” underlines in dramatic fashion what a comprehensive scrutiny of the market will reveal to any investor who wants to take the time to look. The long and short of it is, mutual funds are not necessarily a good invest- ment and while the yield potential can be high, the risk factor is an equally important consideration. Prudent management of mutual funds can be as capricious as a young girl jumping in and out of skip rope: investors have to keep a close eye on the action continually. But while equity funds performed poorly on average in 1987, RRSP term investments remained solid. Flat, consistent, predictable and not very chic, RRSPs stand in marked contrast to the promising but volatile mutual funds. “The days of the 20 to 30% retums are gone.” warms NSCU's Manager of Trust Services, Keith Sanders. “I don't think mutuals will outperform fixed rates over the next three to five years.” A North Shore Credit Union RRSP term will generate a competitive yield when compared with the average equi- ty investment and as amazing as it might seem, our RRSPs actually outperformed both Mutual Fund and Canada Savings Bonds con- sistently over one, three and five years in 1987. (see chart) dust a reminder that the deadline for contributing to RRSPs for the 1987 year is February 29, 1988. If you are coniributing to a new plan by mail, your application and deposit must be received by the plan issuer on or before the contribution deadline. If your deposit is to an existing pian, it will be acceptable as long as your envelope is postmarked by the deadline. A mother of three and former teacher's aide, Cathy has worked as a File Clerk for three and a half years. “But I don’t really do a lot of filing,” confesses Cathy. ‘Tm usually sorting and check- ing cheque orders, crawling over pro- blem statements, assigning safety deposit boxes and a host of other odds ’n ends instead.” Cathy puts her more creative energy to work on her cwn time, rummaging through remnant bins for materials to build her ‘Christmas Wall Hangings’. The North Vancouver Arts Council asked to exhibit her work after see- ing some of her stunning Wall Hang- ings displayed at the Lonsdale Branch. Cathy’s first exhibition — the ‘Christmas Story’ series -- was presented at the North Vancouver Court House through this past month of December. “The inspiration came to me out of the blue,” says Cathy. “‘Tve painted commissioned work in the past but this is a more novel art form and I really enjoy the freedom of the medium.”
