LORANGER RETIRES

He became a full-fledged sports
writer in 1940 at $12.50 a week, a
raise of some 79 per cent. Thereaf-
ter, Loranger moved rapidly up the
Newspaper writing ladder, writing
his first column in 1942.

The brash morning paper, the
News Herald, lured him away
from the Province in 1943 to cover
baseball and to continue writing a
column. He remained there until
1951 when he returned to the Pro-
vince as a sports columnist.

Since then, Lvuranger has
covered baseball and hockey. He
was the rruvince’s hockey beat
man when the Vancouver Canucks

were playing out their years in the
Western Hockey League, and con-
tinued to cover them during their
first five years in the National
Hockey League.

He turned out columns on a
regular basis three to five times a
week, even as a beat reporter. His
present masthead catch phrase, ‘‘It
Says Here ...,’° was inaugurated
back in 1965. He and Jim Taylor
currently share columnists’ billing.
