This year, more than ever, people are taking advantage of the Municipal Pool in West Vancouver. Adult lessons have filled, aquatic fitness classes have doubled and length swims show steadily increasing at- tendance. An informal survey show- ed that pool users are recognizing that swimming is at least as good as jogging and cycling for car- diovascular fitness. It also contributes to muscle flex- ibility and joint mobility — particularly in the arms, shoulders and hips. Unlike jogging, swimmm- ing does not subject your joints and muscles to the stress of pounding and jarr- ing which create chronic in- juries. In fact, it is very un- likely that you will injure yourself while swimming. For this reason, it is often recommended to athletes who are recovering from their own sport specific inju- ries. PRE-SUMMER recommended for pregnant women, the elderly and the Obese. It consumes approx- imately 250-400 calories per hour, depending on the in- tensity of your workout. Buoyancy, which is enhanced by the number of fat cells you have, is an advantage when working out in water. An adult lesson program is a good base to start from. Instructors will correct ‘tech- nique and explain how to best receive cardiovascular workout while swimming. | They can also refer you to instruction in the weight room. Once you have suffi- cient technique, you can swim in a drop-in basis or join a program. An alternative for non- swimmers who wish to begin a fitness activity immediately is an aquatic fitness class.
