SCULPTURE Racing ahead on competition “EVERYTHING IS about to gel.’’ Ella Parkinson, former president of Community Arts the executive director and the North Vancouver Council, is describing the group’s fundraising efforts for their upcoming sculpture competition. The winning creation is expected to be completed by the official opening date of Expo &6. “We've got a number of soft commitments, but I can’t put a figure on the amount we've had ecommitted,’’ says Parkinson. *‘We're currently in the negotiating stage with several companies and I wouldn’t want to endanger any of those talks by revealing details.”’ The NVCAC’s budget for the competition 1s $150,000, with half that amount already pledged by the City of North Wancouver. By JOANNE. MacDONALD Parkinson says the group’s request for $10,000 from the District of North Vancouver has not yet been confirmed, adding the NVCAC will be approaching the District with another proposal within the next week. “We're going to suggest that perhaps they could consider staggering their contribution over a couple of years,’’ says Parkinson. ‘We're planning on= ap- proaching West Vancouver as well. Our mandate is for the City and District, but we think of ourselves as the North Shore, not three dif- ferent municipalities.’ Fundraising efforts, which started February 29, are expected to continue. Parkinson says almost 40 entries have been received from artists to date. However, the site where the winning entry will be located in the waterfront park at the Lonsdale Quay has yet to be supphted with infill. lt seems the park, which is being ex- tended into Burrard Inlet, ts not yet completed. Parkinson says the NVCAC is. hoping park construction will be finished soon, so that artists can be given their criteria for the competiuon.
