Dear Editor Very soon Canadians coast to coast will be asked once again to donate money to the Canadian Cancer Society Before dipping into” your pocket consider the following: 1. When asked how many lives have been saved with the some $25 million” raised through the ferry Fox Marathon ot Hope cam- paign, the Canadian Societys did not come up with even once case! 2. The American Cancer Socety has in the past spent more moneys on its emplovees than on cancer research. When asked how much wt spends on emplovees and specifically what the three top salanes are, the CCS refused to information. 3. 1 was told people can join the CCS as volunteer workers, e.g. going door to door to raise money, but peo- ple cannot vote on CCS policy, including how the money raised is to be spent 4 Me Master Anatomy Professor George Lewis has said that people donating to the COS ‘might as well ftlush thei money away or throw ait out of the give the Loniversity window for all the good it will do because it is used on research instead of preven- tion.’’ Added Lewis, accor- ding to the Canadian Press report: “‘We spend dollars tor a cure and penmes for preventwion.”’ S. In another CP report Hugh Johnston, Chairman of the Saskatchewan Cancer Society's Advisory © ommit- tee, said “itis unlikely that a vaceine would ever be developed for cancer "" Statistics show that one out of three Canadians will get cancer and that most people Don't buy LIVE toys Dear Editor It is almost Eastertime again and once more the pet stores will be filled with ducklings, chickens and tabbits which will end up in the hands of voungsters on Easter morning Some of these youngsters, too young to know any. better, will squeeze the life from these baby animals Others will lose interest ino their new “tov'' and parents will be left to feed and care tor it Will pay to read Doug Dear Editor IT will gladly pay fora subscription fo vour paper to be able to tead Doup Callas’ Cobunminas Dour makes me think and brings up oussues Pomay be totally unaware of otherwise B M. Yet according to the World Health Organization at least 80 per cent of all cancer is en- vironmentally caused, largely by cancer-causing agents in our food, water and air. The fact that the government and the CCS proportionately do almost nothing in the area of caneer prevention is because they consider corporate wealth more important than public health The CCS should take the advice of such eminent scien- usts as Dr Samuel Epstein, Protessor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Liniversity of Ithnots, and switch its emphasis to ef- fective cancer prevention programs The Society should also be fully accountable to the public as to how it spends its funds and allow the public to yon the society as members with the mght to vote on policy decisions. Until the Canadian Cancer Society makes those changes, it simp- ly doesn't deserve the public Support it has had up ull now John Moelaert Kelowna Are smokers resurrected? Dear Editor Mr. Don Francis, in an April 8 letter to the editor, states: “‘lt (smoking kills) ts a clearly established fact. The mortality rate tor smokers is double the rate for non-smokers ”’ Is at then an established tact that the key to immor- tality has been discovered?
