See story at right for details. Light falls, | Starts fire A GROW LIGHT that dropped onto a couch is believed to have been the cause of a fire Sunday that extensively damaged a suite in a Keith Road apartment building. According to inspector” Dave Burgess the lamp, which was attached to a ceil- ing hook by a spring clamp, either fell of its own accord or short circuited. The resulting fire destroyed the couch, and damaged a nearby sewing table and chest. The _ re- mainder of the suite suffered heavy smoke and heat damage, however. The heat at one point was so intense, it caused the win- . dows of the apartment to ex- plode. Walls were covered with soot and glass and plastic items throughout the apartment either cracked, melted or broke because of the heat. The suite’s occupant was not home at the time of the fire. Burgess said it was only the quick action of the tenants of the apartment building, located at 161 East Keith, tharprevented the fire from spreading -beyond the suite. “‘When they first smelled smoke, they pulled the alarm and telephoned the fire department right away,’’ Burgess said. By the time the fire depart- ment arrived, the tenants had been evacuated and the fire located. The extra two or three minutes the fire department gained by the-early alarm, Burgess said, helped prevent the fire from spreading.
