Who speaks out for Stephen?

Dear Editor:

The silence is deafening.

Do you hear the Civil
Liberties Association, the
Law Union, Art Kube,
Hanne Jensen, Dave Barrett,
or any other member of
Operation Solidarity cry out,
‘Injustice! Shame!
Fascism!’’ in outrage over
the treatment of pipefitter
Stephen Craig of Prince
George by Local 58 of the
Canadian Paperworkers
Union? Why?

Stephen Craig obeyed the
law and crossed an illegal
picket line set up last August
by his fellow employees. His
union subsequently subjected
him to enormous. verbal

abuse and decided to
discipline Stephen Craig to
show him thatif the union
wanted him to break the law,
he had to. Now a Union
tribunal has ruled in secret
proceedings that Stephen
Craig must pay $1,000 to his
union and attend every union
meeting for the next two
years, or face more fines.

What a disgrace!!

The Charter of Rights
guarantees Stephen Craig the
fundamental freedoms of
conscience, thought, belief,
Opinion and expression. Fur-
thermore, the Charter
guarantees that every citizen
has the right to pursue the
gaining of a livelihood in any

babysitting scheme

Dear Editor:

In reading the article Oct.
19/83 North Shore News —
is a commercial babysitting
service a daycare centre?

As far as I can see, daycare
is for the working people but
a babysitting service would
be more for the housewife or
single parent who may find it
hard to get a sitter for one or
two hours during the day to
get to appointments.

The drop-off service is one
of the best ideas brought to
council and I will back it ail
the way. As a mother of two

children it is not the best
thing dragging them off look-
ing for a home or to your Dr.
appointments etc.

Sure you can ask Granny
or a frend but that can get
very depressing.

treated like scum.

When October 31st rolls
around, and Operation
Solidarity calls a general
strike, just think of the
honesty and devotion of the
leaders of Solidarity to the
practice of democracy in
unions. And when Operation
Solidarity screams at amend-
ments introduced to the B.C.
Labour Code, consider what
happened to the civil rights of
that courageous pipefitter
from Prince George, Stephen
Craig.
