SE Nene OR Dear Editor: I wnite this letter in response to what I and many other parishioners feel is a severe distortion of both the sermon given at Holy Trinity Church on Father’s Day and the position of the Church in general regarding abortion. The point of this letter is not to start off another debate between the ‘‘pro- abortionists” and the “pro- lifers”, but rather, to correct drastic misinterpretations which, indeed, reflect on the way which the clergy of Holy Trinity relaté issues to their parishioners. First of all, I suggest to you that the letter entitled “Single Issue” Church was written by an individual who was quite biased about the issue in question in the first place, ie., a woman's right to an abortion, which seemed to become for Mr. Delaney, “ ... the practice of in- doctrination by the use of rigid, narrow doctrines in the guise of a Father's Day message.” First of all, a homily on abortion would seem not so out of place on Father's Day, given that the pro-life stand is that abortion results in the death of a child, and it is from the child that the term “father” (and “mother”) gains significance. Mr. Delaney’s insistence that the sermon was, heavily emotionally laden and backed by a rigid doctrine which preaches tunnel vision — or else!” seems also quite surprising, given that the priest took great pains to discuss all aspects of the issue — the scientific and the practical, as well as the religious and ethical. Never at any time did the priest ever say or suggest that his arguments should be taken literally and strictly ... or else ... one was not a good Catholic, or, one was damned to hell. As for the priest's attempt to, mobilize its congregations on the Lions Gate Hospital Society,” what the priest did was ask each parishioner if he or she would become a member of the Lions Gate Hospital Society so that their opinion could be heard and reflected in a hospital board election. Indeed, the choice was there! Further, I didn’t know that in a democratic society it was doctrine-inspired crusade” or “... single issue lobbying " for one to express himself or herself through discussion and involvement of issues. Our firm has been in operation since March of this year, and we have dedicated our efforts to providing an improved level of service on the North Shore. Our cabs are air- conditioned Cadillac and Lincoln automobiles, and kept very clean at all times. Our drivers wear jackets, shirts and ties, open doors, nock on doors and always assist with luggage and grocenes. Every effort 1s made to maintain a top level service. The drivers are bonded as a condition of employment, and = our business is growing, despite the recession. Our dispatchers call the banks each morning to determine the exchange rates, and such ts broadcast to the drivers and posted: on the Friendship Wheel to the closest nickel. Today’s exchange rate is listed at $1.25. I stress these points as we are congizant of the im- portance of providing top service to tourists, and also offer personal tours to that end. One of our drivers received a “Good Show” pin from Premier Bennett for service rendered, and we are happy to welcome tourists to our beautiful city. I hope that other cab firms recognize the negative impact, created which BUCKLE UP EVERY BODY day's and » Training, threatens the welfare of the tourism industry, by failing to offer a fair exchange. What a poor world it would be if in- dividuals never spoke out against those things which they felt were fundamentally wrong —— whatever they may be! As for being a single-issue group, I suggest that Mr. Delaney listen to, and perhaps even attend, more of the sermons at Holy Trinity Church. Abortion, an important issue, is one of many topics discussed at the church. Believe it or not, humanitarian subjects are also preached about. Mark Hagemoen North Vancouver 2‘patients’ Dear Editor: D. Williams, in his letter “Keep out Pro Life politics”, is misguided in sensing political ambition as the motive for legal action against members of the abortion committees at L.G.H. He states that the decision about potential ‘termination’ (a _ nice euphemism for ‘killing’) should be strictly between the physician and patient. Presumably by ‘patient’ he means the mother — but what of the other ‘patient’ Sager’s Summer Sale American Furniture Floor Samples 20% - 30% OFF Abortion sermon ‘defended’ °° lifers’ action ‘narrow-minded’ Dear Editor: In my opinion the Lions Gate Hospital and her doctors are an example of compassion in upholding the World Health Organization's definition of health in the abortion issue. I totally support the stand taken by the Hospital Board to defend the 17 doctors who are being taken to count in an action filed by the two pro-lifers, Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Whelton. I think the action by said pro-lifers is petty narrow- mindedness. I also believe that the only reason they wanted to be on the LGH Board is in order to force their ideas into hospital policy. They are, one might in abortion involved? Children in their mothers’ wombs are unable to voice their decisions — if they could, I am sure they would choose life. It is the duty of society to protect the weak and defenseless and this. is precisely the motive behind this litigation — to uphold the law which ts supposed to protect people from being arbitrarily disposed of by those who decide they are ‘unwanted.’ J.M.
