C10 - Sunday, May 2, 1982 - North Shore News QUESTION: Ive got to get away from here. I've screwed up everything here and feel like I ought to make a new start in another location altogether. I have gradually got myself “in the middle” at work, between two of my “superiors”; my social life is almost zilch; (because of stories about me) I have very few friends now; (because of the same stories) I don’t like the suite Pm living in; [ve got too many relatives round about, all of them wanting to give me advice and run my life. Even my girl-friend is a problem to me hecause | have a definite feeling she's on the make for my best friend. In other words, almost everything seems to be going the wrong way. I wouldn't be surprised if I lost OK, ‘so here are some of the reasons why I say [ve got There'll alwa NaN QUESTION: I feel quite silly about raising the question that is bothering me. It will surely seem unimportant to you, but it bothers me a jot. The fact is I have terrible hatred for Mondays! I like week-ends a lot, but time and again Ill have a dull rotten feeling about tomorrow being Monday. 1 don't think it has anything to do with my job because it's a good one and | enjoy it. But on Monday mornings I just want to stay home or go into some sort of hibernation from which Pll wake up all ready for Tuesday. I'd like to just leave out Mondays. Why am I bike that and do you know anything I can do about it? STEWART: There may be some specific reason for your feelings about) Mon days. You may have trained yourself not to face up to ut and handle tt, of you may have “forgotten” what it ts. There 15 a possibility that therapy would be helpful to you in that the experience of regression might open up to you the beginning reasons for your strong feelings about Mondays There ts) also) a) good possibility that you could ask hayden stewart Freelance Counsellor Hayden Stewart may be reached at 261-6242 for appointments for individual, family or group counselling. Time to stop running to get away from here. But there's another whole part to my problem and that is that | don’t want to feel like ['m running away from dif- ficulties. 1 desperately want to get out of here, but I know I would always feel like I have given up on myself. What do you think about my getting away and starting a new life? I forgot to tell you that I am 27. STEWART: “Getting away and starting a new life” has a nice ring to it, but I think it doesn’t work that way. We don’t really start new lives, but rather we give way to the emerging of new dimensions of life. You don’t leave the old life and start again. What you do is start with waht you've got so far and enter into an intentional time of transformation. Being in a new location might help you in your emerging, but not, if, reverse your. attitudes without the therapy. The first thing, I suppose, would be for you to be willing to accept the fact that every few days for the rest of your life, there is going to be Monday. You will not be able to skip Mondays and wake up all ready for Tuesdays. That sort of thing will not work. You will be living on Mondays for the rest of your life. One seventh of all your remaining time on earth will be spent on Mondays In co-operation with that bit of your reality, give Monday a chance to make its special contnbutions to your hfe Plan out ways to let Mondays serve you well A sneaky plug QUESTION: How come you counsel on Tuesdays only on the North Shore? ['m ted up on Tuesdays. North Shore residents are bheing discriminated against. Aren't you ashamed? ys be Monday as you say, you are only running away. Someone said, “You can never really get away — you can only take yourself someplace else.” Remember, you would be taking the SAME person someplace else. Perhaps you should do both. Why not get yourself into the way of finding your new life right here where you live, and then, if you still want to do so, you could go away without feeling you were running. Right here where you live, or in the new location you have in mind, you will have your total self to start with. That is as much as any of us have. You have what it takes, here, or there. But you probably will not find more of yourself just because you are in a dif- ferent place. Get ready to GO someplace, not just to LEAVE here. Inaugurate a plan that will reverse the Monday syn- drome that you don't like. Allow Monday to become the day on which you do things you like. Hike, have a party, meditate, help somebody, splurge in the kitchen, or get together with special friends. Start USING Mondays joyfully instead of hating them. I'm saying that you are RESPONSIBLE FOR MONDAYS. Make them, different. By your own decision, turn things around. You don’t like Mondays the way they are? Then change them to suit you. Don't give into them as though they control your hfe You're in charge of Mondays Make them good!
