Playhouse on Saturday, November 21 at 8:00 p.m. The play is based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, “Notre Dame de Paris” . Hugo is acknowledged as one of the world’s finest romantic novelists. Born in France in 1802, he was first recognized as a poct, and had established a reputation as such by the time he was cighteen years old. “Notre Dame de Paris” was publish- ed in 1831, and the story of the deformed Quasimodo’s love for the gypsy Esmerelda, set in fifteenth century Paris, captured the public's attention im- mediately. Along with “Les Miserables”, “Notre Dame de Paris” is Hugo's finest and most en- during work. As playwright Dennis Foon says, “Everybody loves somebody _ they can't have.” THE HUN- CHBACK OF NOTRE DAME maintains § the melodramatic thrills of the original novel. Artistic Director of Van- couver’s Green Thumb Theatre for Young People, an internationally acclaimed company, Mr. Foon's plays include “The Windigo” (which is being produced this year at the Neptune Theatre in Halifax and the Citadel Theatre in Edmon- ton), and “New Canadian Kids”, which has been in- vited to the Newham Inter- national Pestival in London, England. Mr .Foon is also the Vice President of the Inter- national Association of Theatre for Young P. . THE HUNCHBA OF NOTRE DAME is directed considered | by Playhouse Artistic Direc- tor, Roger Hodgman, who' suggested that Mr. Foon adapt “Notre Dame de Paris” for the stage. Born in Tasmania, Mr. Hodgeman worked as a television and theatre director in Australia. He has been Artistic Direc- tor of the Playhouse for two years, and this spring he dircted ‘“‘The Dutch Courtesan” for the National Theatre School in Montreal. The hunchback, Quasimodo, is played by Henry Woolf. In over twenty years as a performer, Mr. Book your office Xmas parties now.
