RCMP job to
keep tabs on
Croatian militia,
human rights

RCMP Cpl. Gene Slobod says
his seven- -month experience in
the “tense peace” thal is

“Little things fike having run-
ning water, having power and hav-
ing stores full of food are wonder-
ful because you don't have them
over there. The basics of life are
non-existent,” said Slobad.

Last May, he began a period of
leave from the North Vancouver
RCMP to be one of 43 RCMP
memoers serving in the former
Yugoshavia at the time.

The RCMP job was to monitor
the local police, called militia, to
ensure there were no human cights
violations and to oversee that inves-
tigations were done correctly.

“That's the theary behind it,
anyway,” said Slabad, who worked
ats an operations manager of the
police monitors.

He said 150 civilian police offi-
cers from 21 nations served in the
former Yugoslavia,

Slobod described the civil war
asa “major mess.”

“Everybody is claiming the
sume piece of land,” said Slobad.

Ue stayed in Erdut, on the
Croatian side of the Danube. The

He was in a United Nations

' (UN) protected zone bounded by
Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and
Croatia. |

He said approximately 700 UN
soldiers from Belgium and Russia
were in the area.

Slobod, who was unarmed, said
he was not concerned with his safe-
ty although he heard one mortar
attack while he was there.

“Sure, there were imes wher
you’d sit there and wonder, because
everybody was armed. Everyone
carries AK47s and side-arms. There
are monients where you question
your safety,” said Slobod, adding
the area was “fully mobilized.”
