The service processes images trom APS, 35 mm, digital, prints and the Internet. Customers can choose to come in to the store to crop, size and order photos direetly through available touch- screen computer monitors. Images can be posted and stored ata Future Shop Web site, where selected visitors can view and order images. Said lan Knight, Future Shop digital phote lab manager in West Vancouver, “Everything we do is done ina digisal file, rather than an analogue file or a standard optical printing process like most labs do.” The computer equipment available today com- bined with image manipulation software allows the photo lab more control, creativity and flexibility with a customer's images. Said Knight, “We get the opportunity to do things with images that wouldn’t ordinarily be done. We correct minor flaws that people are familiar with — red eve for instance is a huge problem.” Because it’s a digital file the lab can improve the contrast and work with particular areas of an image frame, rather than the entire frame. “Most labs can make it lighter or “darker and that’s it. We can make a specific area lighter or darker. We can correct for backlighting for instance,” Knight said. The lab also works with programs built into the system that automatically remove scratches and dust. The Park Royal service is the result of an agreement between Future Shop, Kodak and Noritsu Koki (the largest manufacturer of photo-finishing equipment in the world). Future Shop chose West Vancouver for its first digital photo- Rnishing service partially because the demographics of the North Shore area told the company that people buy a lot of digital cam- eras here. “They are early adopters of new technology. This store in particular sells more digital cameras than most of our stores,” Knight said. — Michael Becker Watch for MP3 Those companies include include Creative Labs (CREAF-Q), maker of SoundBlaster and Nomad From page 15° make money from all this? None of the file-swapping companies hitting the news seems a likely prospect to garn much revenue — let alone profit — anytime soon. But some companies are making money from MP3, such as makers of spe- cially-designed computer speakers (so that music played back through a com- puter sounds a lot better), sound cards and dedicated MP3 players. MP3-players, and $3 Inc (SHI-Q), which has the pio- neering Rio handheld MP3 player in its line-up. The market is not too excited by either company. At around $21 per share, Creative Labs is at close to half its 52- week peak price of $38.31, while $3 hovers between $10 and $12, or about half of the company’s 52-week high of $24.81 per share. Creative Labs is hoping to shake up the market in the next few weeks with the release of its Nomad Jukebox MP3 player, which comes with an on-board six- Gigabyte hard drive capable of storing about 2,000 songs in MP3 format (that’s about 150 albums). $3 Inc. has its growth hopes pinned on a digital tuner that sucks songs from your desktop computer into an MP3- based home entertainment unit, Given that there is huge players to move | demand by users to continue ° enjoying songs in MP3 for- . - mat, however, one of these = devices is likely to hit a home run sooner or later.
