The provinge will announce the next round of infrastructure grants to improve local ser- vices and help strengthen B.C.’s economy later this spring. Funding tor smiall-community protection grants is being maintained at $23.8 million for sntall- and medium-sized municipalities. These are unconditional grants to assist municipalities in providing basic services. Grants to communities with fewer than 5,000 residents have been maintained since 1996. The province will also maintain the funding level for the uafftic-fine revenue sharing pro- gram established last vear at $13.2 million. This program recognizes focal government efforts in traffic safety programs. The second round of infrastructure grant commitments will be made later this spring as the province enters the second phase of the three-year, $150-million program announced fast year. Grants to regional districts will be main- tained at 1999 levels. The transitional assistance program, which is being phased out, will be reduced this year from $3.3 million to $1.6 million. The impact on the communities affected will be fess than one-halfof 1% of their total operating revenue. The province is also continuing discussions with local governments on legislative reform and increasing financial flexibility.
