Now, after a year of steady employment, Sarita is making plans for a long-term career in hair design. For years, Sarita’s attempts to find meaningful work were fruitless. Her inexperience, combined with a competitive job market, made finding a job difficult. But Sarita’s greatest. challenge was that she is deaf, and few employers consider hiring people with disabilities. Stephanie and Sarita made a list of businesses to contact met Social Devela and then called Business Works to secure 2 training allowance for Sarita’s new emplover. “Working with Business Works has been wonderful,” said Nichol. “Many of my deaf clients have obstacles to overcome, ingludiag their disabilities, no work experi- ence and cultural and fan- guage barriers. Training allowances are sometimes what they need to get their foot in the door, and to allow employers to spend the extra time needed to communicate with them.” Business Works, a work- place-based training program sponsored by the Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security and the BC Chamber of Commerce, offered Axis Hair Salon $2,500 to hire and train Sarita.
