Mailbox Take action on lost co-op funds Dear Editor: Re: the current situation of the Teachers’ Investment and Housing Co-operative. I would like to alert members of the Co-op on the North Shore to the fact that an action group has been initiated at Capilano Colle «+ We hope to obtain the nar Dear Editor: One year ago February, 1985 six young ladies approached a security guard at the Lynn Valley Centre Mall requesting help to find them a place where they could meet with their friends after school without becoming a nuisance to the public. That guard’s husband was a director of the Lynn Valley Com- munity Association and, after con- tacting two fellow directors and a district alderman, he arranged a meeting with the girls. The result of this and two subsequent meetings plus a lot of running about, was that this group set up the Lynn Valley Teen Drop-In Centre, which opened at the Lynn Valley Hall in April, 1985. This was to be run by the youth with adult supervision being sup- plied by the Community Associa- tion. The Drop-in has become such a success that after only nine months we negotiated an increase in hours on Friday from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to 3:45 to 11 p.m. However, because of the in- crease in the number of partici- ~ pants, the association was advised to purchase adequate insurance coverage for the volunteers. This proved to be too much, as the lowest deductible fee was too exorbitant for the association to cover. The executive of the association decided, after consultation with the Lynn Valley Youth Advisory Committee, to hand over the -supervisory role of the Drop-In to the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, as we understand that they have sufficient coverage if the Drop-Ins is one of their pro- grams. The community association identified a need for the youth of Lynn Valley and has endeavored to work with the youth to find a solu- tion. The young participants have worked very hard to keep the Drop-In going, so it is my sincere wish that we all can work together and make sure it remains open. As president of the Lynn Valley Community ‘Association, | would like to thank the Recreation Commission for its rescue of this very successful program and, | look forward to assisting whenever we are required. { must also thank all the volun- teers who helped at the Drop- In—especially the three people who gave up every Friday evening for nine months to be at the cen- tre. They are: Gwen Stockwell, Steve Davis and Jetf Taylor. We are all in your debt. Michael J.
