Though just a tiny village, the place is ‘all of tour buses, gift shops and two, that's right, nwo, Loch Ness Monster muscums — the “Official” and the “Original”. My advice would be to ‘steer clear ~of the place. Instead, check out Urquhart Castle on the shore of Loch Ness. It was from here that an 8th century monk reported sighting a monster in the loch. Not much is lett of the once mighty garrison, howev- er the original tower is still intact, and the contrast of the green green grass, the rock walls and the dark loch makes fos incredible photo ops. Jumping back in the car we continued up A&2 and in 20 minutes arrived in the capital of the Highlands, Inverness. Like Fort William, this city is a tourist hub, with the train station and bus terminal full of backpackers and travellers clutching maps and brochures. Points of interest bere include Inverness Castle, St. Andrew’s Cathedral and a muscum and art’ galiery. However, the most popular site in Inverness is actually just a few miles cast. The Culloden battlefield is a haunting place, with over- grown heather and brambles belying the bleak events of April 16, 1746. On that day, Bonnie Prince Charles’ army was slaughtered by a government army under the Duke of Cumberland. Over 1,500 Highlanders were killed, while 30 government soldiers lost their lives. A short film in the visitor centre theatre is well worth a viewing, ax is a walk around the battlefield, where small monuments commemorating clansmen dot the Jandscape. Back in Inverness for the night we arrived at the Heathmount Hotel, a central- ly-located inn that once was two separate iarm houses. Located on Kings Mill Road, the inn is perfectly siruated for walks into the town centre, which is dominated by a nec work of large pedestrian walk- ways. ‘Feeling like a break ‘from pub food, we inquired at the Heathmount pub about find- ing a good curry. The bar- tender directed us to the Bulri Hurt Restaurant in the centre of town. The authentic Indian food was excellent as was the te to Inverness service and atmosphere. Back at the Heathmount for a wee whiskey | in the work- ing class lounge, I struck up a conversation with a local, him- self having a dram. “Ben Nevis?”, he said at one point during our malt fuelled conversation. *Luddic, you donna wanna go up there.
