signals THE nice thing about driving 4 bus is that you’re always guaran- teed a place to park. Or are you? This seems to be a partic- ular problem for bus drivers down in the passenger pick- up zone at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. Traffic engineers have gone to great lengths to accommodate both car and bus drivers fetching a walk- on/walk-off passenger from the terminal, yet many a bonchead ignores the signs directing drivers to a specific area to await their bi-pedal cargo. West Vancouver's Bay Street runs north/south right ~eagit front of BC Ferry’s passen- ger loading area. On the west side of the street several signs read, in kindergarten-picture form, “No Stopping, Taxies Park Here.” On the east side of Bay Street similar I1Q-of- 20-or-more signs read: “No Stopping, Buses park here.” It is amazing how many car drivers insist on ignoring these signs, perhaps thinking that because they’re acting in a similar fashion to a bus, the “No Stopping” signs do not apply to them. I suspect, howev- er, that the majority of these lazy folk simply cannot be othered, and because cops are rarely around to hand out parking tickets, a quick stop in the zone is likely to go unnoticed. Good grief. Last spring BC Ferries, pressed by West Vancouver to solve the heavy traffic prob- lem during ferry landings, revamped the entire passen- ger loading area and created a 46 stall, 5-to-15 minute free parking lot for automo- bile drivers loading or ‘97 ESTEEMEY if : ¥ 3 yr/80, 0001 m farran North Vancouver Suzuki 71695 Marine Dr., N. Despite recent changes to the loop, drivers are still clogging up the area, making life miserable for bus drivers. unloading Ferry passengers. Five-to-15 minutes, coinci- dentally, is roughly the amount of time it takes to pick up or drop somebody oO This foresighttul rework- ing left a longish stretch of Bay Street for buses, which are longish in shape generally, and take the place of a few dozen road-clogging cars spewing, carbon monoxide “It is amazing how many car drivers insist on ignoring these signs, perhaps thinking ... the ‘no stopping’ signs do not apply to them. ” fumes, and loved ones ready to board a ferry. Yer the chaos continues. Cars stop where they’re not supposed to and buses — and bus passengers — are forced to jam the area thereby creat- ing a genuine pedestrian haz- ard (don’t get me started on pedestrian behavior, either; Pve done that one to death}.
