CANADA is the most desirable nation in which to live.
We should be proud that so many people of diverse back-
grounds want to cafl Canada home. But in choosing to
live here immigrants must shure in the responsibilities of
protecting our democratic rights, as well as reaping the
rewards that these rights bestow. When these privileges
are threatened by someone welcomed into the national
fold, should he be rewarded with continued residency in’
Canada, and possibly a more lenient sentence? The
immigration ministry has drawn heat for its policy of

labelling some convicted immigrant criminals “a danger to the public.’ thereby
deporting them without a lengthy, and costly, appeal. But can we, 2 supposedly gen-
tle nation, justify sending immigrants back into an often direful situation? We asked
