'- So it’s all aboard for a . quick hop around some of the many theatrical treats available’ on the North ” Shore and elsewhere this week, _ Starting close to home, Greater Vancouver Operatic Society (GVOS) is back with its annual musical at Centennial Theatre until March 4. - This year's choice is unusual. Frank Loesser (of Guys and Dolls fare) broke traditional barri- ers in 1956 when he pushed the boundary of Broadway musicals towards opera with The Most Happy Fella. The operatic influence spills over from score into plot with melodramatic consequences in this quasi-Italian story of a May- September mail-order romance. Musical highlights include Standing On The Corner, Song of a Summer Night and anything by the singing chefs of Adam Kozak, Tony Serka and Richard Theiss. Hervey K. Hicks strong baritone is in a class of its own but unfortunately feels like it is starring in a solo musical. The problem of contrasting professional and amateur voices is exacerbated by the lack of chemistry between Hicks’ Tony and Laara Brown’s Rosabella. Brown does not really succeed in making us care about her predicament and she’s not helped in establishing her presence by some decidedly odd costume choices. But there are other pleasures to be enjoyed. Stealing the spotlight whenever they are on stage are LouAnne Schmidt and Barrie Mills. Schmidt’s performance as Cleo is an all around standout and together with Mills, who can make you smile just by being there, proves once again that selling a song in a musical is as important as singing it. For once in a musical, the American values espoused are not traditional appie-pie, although politically they remain questionable. Stil, I was probably the only audience member won- dering why a woman had to get a man to be happy and why punching someone made a man a hero. So, if you’ve got them, check your political scruples with your coat and allow The Most Happy Fella to treat you to a mostly jolly evening of musical surprises.
