Tarling, 34, says the painting is an explo:
ration of self. “Life is chaotic. There are picces
missing, and pieces added — always changing,
always i in flax,” she says of the multi-layered
work with its fragmented images.

It is abso an expression of ‘her relationship
with her son, Max, who was born deaf-blind
and died last vear at the aye of 6%.

“Wich his being deat-blind, I really started
to think a for about how we see the world.
We live so much through our vision. Its our
heart and our senses,” says the artist.

For Tarling, painting ts like writing a piece
of poetry but using a paint brush instead.

“Paint wasn’t always my thing...” she
writes. “..books and writing poctry were
most important for a long while.

“She was a poet first, and it really is
apparent in the work,” she says. “There's a
real depth of perception there of certain
human emotions that she understands them
and she can communicate them. She has.a
very contemporary style that is of real
