World Series woes From page 19 As a result, the Series was called off. That's the sort of thing that can happen when a sports columnist moves up irt the world to become a league president. A decade earlier Johnson was writing a sports col- umn in Cincinnati, where the owner of the old home team was the same John T. Brush. Johnson was a con- stant and acerbic critic. Brush grew to dislike him intensely. Johnson left sports writing to foiin another baseball circuit, the Western League. In 1901, he changed the name to American and declared it to be a major league. Two years later the National league agreed that it was, indeed, a major: league and thus the post-season playoff was started. The Pilgrims beat Pittsburgh in a best-of-nine series in 1903 and repeated as AL champions in 1904. The Brush-owned Giants were the NL champions. Brush hated AL president Johnson from 10 years before in Cincinnati. McGraw also hated him because, when he man- aged in Johnson’s league, the presi- dent suspended him several times for abusing umpires. So, they refused to play Boston. There was no commissioner in these days to solve the problem, just as there is no commissioner in 1994, Result: no World Series. Back then it was met with little more than a shrug, which maybe is how it should have been met just last week. How do I know? My barber, who works in a shop where, as in all barber shops, sport is constantly discussed, tells me the baseball strike and World Series cancella- tion haven’s inspired more than three minutes of conversation in the past month. Varsity sports return SUMMER’S OVER, and that means the kids are back at school. It also means the kids are back at school sports. The 3rds had much the same experience, as they blast- ed the Kats 51-6. The surprise of the weekend for the North Shore clubs was its 3Bs’ 13-3 decision over the defending provincial champs from Gibsons, ‘The 4As beat the Brits 27- 12, and the 4Bs pulled a sur- prise of their own, dropping UBC Old Boys by a score of 24-17.
