Don’t miss the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre IN THE first instalment, I suggested that we'd travel two days and rest for one. The first rest was in Fort Macleod and we haven't needed another! The roads — mostly sec- ondary — are great, the Astro is a - fine vehicle, even in winds that have been sometimes steady at 65 mph, gusting to over 70 (South Daxota). _. We hoped to find motels with kitchenettes, which worked until we left Havre, Montara. Nothing . ‘since. After a few days. of struggling ; with. roadside food, we have 2 system that works. We havc breakfast in our motel, pack pic- -nics_and try to find a deceat place to eat dinner out. ‘For: breakfast, we pack a ‘ granola-type cereal, milk and fruit or juices. Lunch is whole-grain . sandwiches, lean ham ‘and raw '- veggies: It’s working well. It’s not that we can’t afford to ‘ Buy these meals — our stomachs can’t afford to eat them: +. Took'#1 ‘to ° ‘Maple Creek, turned south to the Cypress Hills, missed the cut-off and by the time we realized, it was .too late to turn back. Signs are awful! Stop in Maple Creek and ask for explicit direc- tions. Fort Walsh is something no one should miss, but... _ We found ourselves in an area . Stayed at the Le Havre Inn — had a suite — $58 — ouch! > Sept. 4: Took U.S. #2 east to Fort Belknap and then #66 south to Billings, Montana. This is real wilderness — no services of any kind once you turn south until you reach the Grasslands turnoff, 100 miles north of Billings. You cross some wonderful country — the Bull Mountains are exquisite — a photographer would go ape. Two things to see in Billings — the old cemetery and Ross Man- sion. If you've got a carload of kids, try Bruno’s Restaurant, near the airport — adequate and rea- sonable. The Custer Battlefield is on the Crow Reserve, near Billings. Allow three hours, minimum. Take the one-hour. bus tour first “then spend some time in the ceme- tery and museum. —- The park wardens give | free lec- _ tures all day. Grab a bite ‘at either ef the two restaurants’ — Brian actually ate a buffalo burger and ‘liked ‘it! ‘“‘Better than beef.’? On. .to Sheridan, Wyoming. -- Don’t look for good hotels ex- cept for the Best Western.- But there’s a restaurant you must try — “Ciao’’‘on Main Street. Just | opened, classic Italian cuisine, relatively inexpensive. - Also, on your way out of town, don’t miss ~ the old Sheridan Inn -~ open as a museum, $3 to tour, priceless. > Sept. 5: We took Highway #90) towards Rapid City, S.D., but cut’ off on exit #85 towards Dead- wood. Last time I was there. (eight years ago) it was a slevply little historic site. It’s awful, now. Gambling is ali over and. the tourists are like ants. Worse,. the table limit bet is $5 so if you're. losing you haven’t a hope in ‘heli. ‘of doubling up and recouping, _ Don’t stay Iong. We cut out quite quickly -to Keystone, the. foot:: of :Mount Paid $70, gratefully.) See the mountain by night - —8 p.m. presentation in the theatre and 9:30 p.m. they turn on the lights on the faces. We had dinner at Ruby House — don’t miss this! It’s an old whorehouse, unchanged decor. The trout is simply, wonderful, but the rest of the meal is fair (yukky salad bar). Brian had ribs -- not bad but not memorable. Reasonably priced. » Sept. 6: Before we left Keystone, we spent an hour at the Rorghium 7??? Museum. He designed Mount Rushmore — awe-inspiring as that is, his other works in the museum are wonder- ful. $5. Next, we visited another “D.M."* —- Crazy Horse. it’s not far-—- about 17 miles. The whole mountain is being curved and it’s impressive. Bring a picnic as the food isn’t great. ~ Headed for Rapid City and hit terrible winds and icy rain, and would have quit for the day. has However, saw the signs for Wall Drugs, about an hour out’of See Traveling page a7 .
